Padstow Harbour by Keith Jansz

Artist: Keith Jansz
Title: Motor Yacht in Padstow Harbour
Medium: Giclee Print
Size: 70cm x 60cm

About the Artist

Lives in: Oxfordshire
Subjects: Figures, cityscapes and water
Style: Mouth Artist
Nationality: British

Keith Jansz started painting for the first time since junior school after having run the London Marathon for Barnardo’s in 1995. Just two months later he suffered a broken neck in a tragic car accident, resulting in complete paralysis from the shoulders down. After six months in the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Keith returned home to begin the painful process of adjusting to his new situation. Unable to do anything for himself Keith naturally experienced the depths of despair.

In December 1996 Keith’s mother-in-law gave him a book entitled ‘ Painters First’, a collection of biographies of the Mouth & Foot Painting Artists. Keith was able to empathise with the artists' tragic stories and was inspired by reading of their triumphs and successes. Eager to encourage this spark of interest Keith’s wife, Cindy, arranged a meeting with the mouth artist Trevor Wells who persuaded Keith to try painting by holding a brush in his mouth. Despite disastrous early efforts, Keith persevered and in 1998 he was accepted as a Student Artist by the international self-help organisation, the Mouth & Foot Painting Artists. This achievement spurred Keith on to work with such determination that in 2000 he was promoted to a full Member Artist within the Association. Since then Keith’s paintings have been sold as reproductions worldwide. He has held numerous solo exhibitions in the U.K., U.S. and Italy and his paintings have been exhibited in museums around the world including Lisbon, Madrid, Copenhagen, Shanghai and Atlanta.

Keith enjoys exploring the sensations of light in his paintings, from the sparkling reflective sunlight at the beach to the unique atmospheric light in Venice and the long shadows of winter light on snow. He also enjoys the demanding discipline of painting the human figure, in pastel or oil. Like his heroes the Impressionists, Keith revels in the challenge of painting ‘en plein air‘ to capture the most authentic effect, completing his paintings in the studio.

Keith's artwork can be seen on his website  https://keithjansz.com/

Spiritual Landscape by Lissu Lundstom

Artist: Lissu Lundstom
Title: Spiritual Landscape
Medium: Oil on Canvass
Size: 60cm x 50cm

About the Artist

Born: 1952
Lives in: Helsinki
Style: Mouth Artist
Nationality: Finnish

Lissu Lundström was born on 19 April 1952 in Helsinki, with a severe disability. She attended a special school where she found that she was able to write holding a pen between her teeth. It was also noticed that she was very interested in painting. At the age of eleven, she made her first attempts to paint, which were promising. Numerous surgical interventions contributed to making her uncontrolled movements less marked and also made painting easier for her. From 1973 onwards Lissu Lundström focussed on her education. The most important part of her education was an art course at the cultural centre for adult education in Helsinki. She experimented with different techniques. She discovered that she preferred painting with oil.

With oil I can express what I have to say, says the artist. Light, colours and the sea provide Lissu Lundström with incredible inspiration. Which is why it is not surprising to see the connection of water, colour and light reappearing frequently in her works. The Association granted the artist a scholarship. Only three years later she became an Associate Member of the AMFPA. She became a Full Member in 1996. She is also a member of the “Finnish Artists Association”. To date, Lissu Lundström can look back on numerous contributions to exhibitions around the world. She has also organised various personal exhibitions in her hometown Helsinki.

In 2000 he was appointed an honorary member of the “Pontificia y Real Archicofradia de Nuestra Senora de la Soledad de la Porteria”, In Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, the patron of which is her Majesty Queen Sofia of Spain. The reason for this appointment was the presentation and the consecration of one of his works for a local church. He discovered a different side of his life to which he did not have access previously – painting with the mouth. It fascinated him to such a degree that he became caught up in it. Mouth painting helped him to bear his fate and even made him forget it for hours.

Josef soon made great progress. By coincidence, he heard about the Association of Mouth and Foot Painting Artists and was made a Student Member in 2004. In 2010 he became an Associate Member of the Association. Initially, Josef Habeler did the paintings on silk cloth and silk scarves. Soon he became interested in watercolour. Recently he had a go at acrylics and oils. Josef’s favourite theme is landscapes. On the occasions of nationwide exhibitions, Josef Habeler has had the opportunity to present his artworks to a broader public.

About the Artist

Born: 1979

She works at a hi-tech company, has been married since 2009 and is a mother. On 25 November 1994, her life was turned completely upside down. She was a “geek” high school student who practised athletics and enjoyed making art craft, when she contracted “Transverse Myelitis” – a rare syndrome which inflated her spinal cord and left her paralysed from the shoulders down, dependent on a ventilator.

After she had recovered sufficiently to come off the ventilator, during rehabilitation, Netta met a mouth and foot painter and decided to give the painting a try. She started out with watercolour and later switching to the acrylic technique which remains her preferred painting method right up to today. Above all, she enjoys painting landscapes, animals, flowers and people. The VDMFK supported her as a student from 2003 to 2015 and she became an Associate Member of the VDMFK in 2015. In 2012 she wrote and illustrated a children’s book which achieved high sale figures in Israel. She is self-taught and uses the internet as her primary source of learning.

Title: Winter Evening
Medium: Oil on canvas
Size: 39cm x 30cm

About the Artist

Born: 1959
Subjects: Landscape
Style: Mouth Artist
Nationality: Slovenian

Zeljko Vertelj was born on 26 July 1959 and is a member of the Society of Paraplegics of the Province of Ljubljana. He spent his young years in the village of Črni potok near Kočevju. He remembers that as a child and a primary school kid, he liked to draw, but after finishing primary school, there was no time for this hobby. Well, there was plenty of time when he became a tetraplegic after a car accident in 1993. After completing his rehabilitation, he went to the Old People's Home in Kočevju and for a while did not know what he was supposed to do with himself.

He tried the painting. First with the drawing, but he didn't do well, because there was no grip or real feeling in his fingers. He heard that some tetraplegics draw with their mouths, so he joined the painters of the Art Section of the Association of Paraplegics of Slovenia. After his first attempts, he realized it wasn't what you were holding the brush with, it was what you could do.
Željko Vertelj has already held a series of solo and group exhibitions. He was educated under the mentorship of Benjamin Krežet andMladeno Stropnik, and now attends art workshops and colonies led by Rasso Causevig and Jože Potokar - Cvrčo. He lives and works in Kočevju.

During his time in hospital David was introduced to painting as an Occupational Therapy, a hobby which fortunately developed into a career.

David married Gillian in 1983, and with Gill and her family’s support his painting skills have flourished. Silvo Mehle was born on 17 May 1971 in Ljubljana, but unfortunately his most settling path on 16 January 2017 ended much, far too soon. After a car accident in 1993, he became extremely severely injured in a wheelchair- With a paint brush in his mouth, he created a rather large bero painting, but gradually he is increasingly consolidating his place in the company of painters. The first steps were a force of self-confidence, but with the additional encouragement of our most creative painter, tetraplegic Vojk Gašperut - Gašperja, the painting moves were getting better.

In 2002 he attended the first art workshop in Semič, which gave him a new elana for further creation. Along the way, he was helped with his knowledge: academic painters Prof. Milan Erič and Mladen Stropnik, as well as current mentors Rasso Causevig and Jože Potočnik - Cvrčo. They are grateful that he has deepened his painting even further and that it has become an important part of his life.

From 2003, he became a Scholarship Holder of the association and in 2011 became an Associate Member. Preferring the technique of oil painting, his themes include still lifes and the landscapes of his homeland.
